about

This song is dedicated to the struggle of indigenous people in the Amazon jungle against the oil companies; especially the Chevron Texaco case in Ecuador, considered the "Amazon's Chernobyl". It also refers to the historical connection with the SIL (Summer Institute of Linguistics) and their evangelisation activities leading to the westernisation and displacement of native people in favor of oil companies, denounced by anthropologists, ethnologists and indigenous people.

lyrics

BIG OIL DEVIL

When the Christians came to my land
we were all naked and we did smile.
The rivers were clean. The jungle was fine.
When the SIL invaded our land.

Down came the Big Oil, Texaco as well,
(thanks to the path that the Christians paved)
telling my people that the oil spills
had their god's blessings and vitamins.

Hundreds of gallons of toxic waste
for thirty years pumped and dumped there;
our sacred home and our people's health
poisoned by greedy pale faces.

November 1993
Amazon's people would take the grit (stood up with grit)
thirthy thousand sued the Texaco's greed.
Down with the Big Oil devil!
Down with the Big Oil devil!
Down with the Big Oil devil!
